As a rare and endemic species of the Himalaya Hengduan Mountains region, the red panda faces severe challenges from habitat fragmentation and wild population decline. At our zoo, a healthy breeding red panda population has not only grown steadily but also become an important bridge connecting the public to the conservation of mountain forest ecosystems.
Steadily Growing Breeding Achievements
By simulating their natural habitat, we have created a suitable living environment for red pandas.A stable breeding population has been successfully established, and the number of newborn individuals has continued to rise in recent years. In our naturalistic exhibits, visitors can observe red pandas displaying a rich variety of natural behaviors. The full preservation of these behaviors confirms that our husbandry and management protocols have successfully maintained their natural instincts.
Education Promoting Conservation Awareness
With unique charm, our red panda exhibit has become one of the most popular educational attractions for visitors.Through carefully designed viewing routes and interactive interpretation systems, we introduce the ecological value and conservation status of the species to the public. When visitors witness the heartwarming scene of red panda mothers carefully caring for their cubs, they naturally develop understanding and support for species conservation.
The successful breeding of red pandas is only the starting point of our commitment to protecting mountain ecosystems. In the future, we will continue to deepen conservation research and expand our cooperative network, so that these “forest elves” may thrive in their natural homes for generations to come.
Meet Our Red Pandas (From Our Keepers)Here’s how our animal caretakers describe our lovely red pandas
Red Panda: Hualin (Flower Forest)Hualin is the smartest and most mischievous red panda, with extremely high intelligence. He is fascinated by the world outside and often sneaks out to explore — yet he always finds his way back by himself. In the evenings, after eating and resting, he even “enjoys reading.”His favorite book is The Thirty-Six Stratagems. He masters tactics like “Running away is the best policy”, “Making a feint to the east and attacking in the west”, and “Luring the tiger out of the mountain” — and uses them perfectly.Who does he use them on?His keepers, of course.Every time he comes out, he only has one goal: to sneak out and see the world. Thanks to his love for adventure, Hualin became an online celebrity and a million-follower internet star at our Red Panda House.
Red Panda: KongliKongli is the “treasure of the house” and another internet star. With a round, chubby appearance, she is extremely popular among visitors. Many guests come to the zoo just to take photos with her.On July 1, 2023, she gave birth to a baby named Yaoqing, nicknamed Xiaoqi (Little Seven) — the little “prince” of Red Panda Garden.Xiaoqi has fluffy fur, a slightly timid personality, and big round eyes just like his mother. He occasionally makes guest appearances at the café and is loved by many visitors.
Red Panda: Jiangtian is another famous red panda, known as the “Boss of the Café”.His fame is equal to Kongli’s.His distinctive spotted nose leaves a deep impression on visitors, and he lives a happy life at the café.
During the 2025 breeding season, we welcomed 8 newborn cubs, affectionately called the “Eight Little Blessings”, bringing vibrant new life to our red panda family.
